The current RAe 4/8 1021 („Double red flèche“) reçut its unforgettable nickname in 1946, when the train was made à available to the British ex-prime minister of the époque for his painting holidays on Lake Léman. Since then, thanks to his travels with Sir Winston Churchill, the train has become known as the Churchill-Pfeil. Churchill visited Bern and Zurich, among other places, where he was acclaimed by the locals. On 19 September 1946, Churchill gave a visionary speech at Zurich University, in which he called for the creation of a kind of United States of Europe, with the following phrase: "Let Europe arise. - Let Europe arise.Prior to its entry into service, the double railcar intended for company travel was introduced in 1939; Zurich as Re 4/8 301 (RBe 4/8 651 from 1948 and RAe 4/8 1021 from 1959) at the prestigious Landi National Exhibition. Participating in the construction were SLM (mechanical part), SWS (interior fittings) and the three companies BBC, MFO and SAAS (all three for the electrical part). In order to achieve a reliable machine in the shortest possible construction time, there were no technical innovations, and the construction was based as far as possible on the elements and methods known from the single red flange, which had been in service for a short time. The double motor coach consisted of two carriages of the same length, independent of each other and each with two bogies and two axles, each of the inner bogies being equipped with a motor per axle. Much of the electrical equipment and auxiliary systems, such as transformers, controls, compressors and brake equipment, were housed under the low bonnets. However, special control via mobile transformers was a regular source of problems and meant that the main workshops in Zurich had to endure long periods of inactivity. After 1946, the train continued to be called « Churchill-Pfeil » and to be used for excursions and special trips in Switzerland, until it suffered a fire in 1979 and was sold for scrap. In 1996, the « Mittelthurgaubahn (MThB) » acquired the machine, which was restored with modern electrical components. Following the bankruptcy of the MThB, the Churchill-Pfeil returned to SBB in 2002. Today, it is once again a functional part of SBB passenger traffic and, as the oldest railcar, is used 5,70 times a year, covering some 20,000 km a year on individual charter and public service trips.
75 years ago, in 1946, the double Flèche Rouge was used to fly Winston Churchill, a guest of the State, across Switzerland, earning him the nickname «Churchill-Pfeil » (Churchill's flèche).
