A touch of history:
The iconic X 2400 railcar series was introduced to the rail network alongside the famous X 3800s, also known as the Picasso. These railcars played a crucial role in the evolution of the French railway landscape, putting an end to the era of steam traction and modernising the railcar fleet.
As soon as they entered service, the X 2400 railcars were assigned to the Limoges depot, mainly providing services in the Massif Central. These vehicles were frequently coupled to XR 7300, 7800 and 8100 unified trailers. Over time, new units were deployed at various depots, including Grenoble (with the arrival of the X 2410, X 2414 and X 2445 in 1954), Rennes, Lyon-Vaise, Marseille, and others.
The X 2400 series was soon accompanied by the X 2800 railcars, equipped with a more powerful, albeit unique, engine. However, due to the high maintenance cost of the X 2400 compared with the X 2800, the series was transferred to the Rennes depot.
The advent of the X 2100 and X 2200 in the 1980s marked the gradual retirement of the series, culminating in 1989. The X 2464 was withdrawn from the fleet in 1988 to undergo a transformation into an electrical installation measuring machine. Sporting the Corail livery in shades of dark grey, orange and white, it was fitted with cartridges specific to measuring machines.
Today, more than ten examples of the X 2400 have been preserved, testifying to the historical importance of this series in the world of model railways.
