A little bit of history:
The Boeing F/A-18 Super Hornet is a single-seat, twin-engine airborne fighter, a direct modern evolution of the original McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 Hornet design. It is wider and heavier than its predecessor, and boasts significantly improved combat performance. Recognisable by the shape of its wings, which ensure great manoeuvrability, and by its enlarged air intakes and tail fins, this aircraft was integrated into the U.S. Navy in the early 2000s to replace the F-14 Tomcat and carry out fleet air defence missions. It has an extended range, improved avionics and is equipped with a 20mm M61 cannon, capable of carrying offensive air-to-air and air-to-ground charges. Two versions have been produced: the single-seat F/A-18E and the two-seat F/A-18F. Thanks to its great operational flexibility, this aircraft excels in a variety of missions such as fleet air defence, ground attack, close support and interdiction.
