A little bit of history:
The RF-4E is a tactical reconnaissance variant derived from the popular McDonnell Douglas Phantom II two-seat multi-role fighter. Specifically designed for export, it combines the reconnaissance systems of the RF-4C with the aerodynamic structure and reinforced engines of the F-4E. The Luftwaffe took delivery of the first examples in the early 1970s, making it one of the first users, alongside Japan, Iran, Israel and Greece. In Germany, many components and reconnaissance systems were also produced locally.
The RF-4E was capable of carrying out all-weather missions and mapping the ground with great efficiency and accuracy, thanks to its infrared sensors, target search systems and cameras.
