A little history:
From 1960 until 1963 the Netherlands Railway (NS) requested new series of covered freight wagons. The design of these wagons was geared towards a new design allowing a more favourable ratio to load volume and load weight.
This innovative study would later become the basis for many Gbs type wagons in the Netherlands but also in other countries.
As an example the DR and then the DB manufactured 13,000 Gbs type wagons, other companies such as the SBB-CFF manufactured numerous models according to their needs. The first version was manufactured with a brakeman's platform and was of the Hbs type. Later, type Gbs wagons were put into service without brakeman's platforms, and ran throughout Europe in epochs IV, V and VI. In the 1970s, many wagons were entered in the EUROP pool.
The first wagons put into service had brown livery, aluminium roller shutters and a grey roof like the aluminium. During maintenance visits, the liveries became brown lacquer for the body, roof and partially also the roller shutters. Thus, these wagons were seen with different liveries.
