A little history:
In 1987, for the summer timetable, quality standards were introduced for cross-border InterCity trains. These criteria covered rolling stock, speed and level of service. Trains that met these standards became known as "EuroCity".
The EC 24 "Erasmus" ran between Innsbruck, the capital of the Tyrol, and Amsterdam, passing through Munich, Frankfurt am Main, and along the Rhine via Emmerich. In this context, the wagons were detached from the front or rear of the train when the locomotive was replaced by a Dutch electric locomotive at Emmerich. As they were only used in Austria and Germany, there was no need for them to be compatible with several electrical voltages.
