A touch of history:
The Corail carriages, put into service by the Société nationale des chemins de fer français between 1975 and 1989, take their name from the word-valise "comfort" and "rail". This term, popularised by advertising, evokes not only the comfort, suspension and soundproofing features of these vehicles, but also the bright orange hue of the doors, distinctive of their first livery.
Arboring an initial light grey livery with a band of dark grey bays and bright orange doors, Corail carriages broke with the traditional "wagon green" of earlier generations. Their mass introduction, with almost 4,000 in service, marked a real step forward in the quality of SNCF's passenger service. These vehicles stand out for their widespread use of air conditioning, their excellence in terms of comfort, suspension and soundproofing, as well as their ability to reach speeds of 160 km/h and 200 km/h thanks to anti-skid equipment on all carriages.
