A little bit of history:
A tank wagon is specifically designed for transporting liquids or powdery substances by rail. There are a variety of models of this type, adapted to the different types of materials transported.
Tank wagons come in a variety of configurations, whether thermally insulated or not, pressurised or not, and intended for single or multiple loading. In the case of non-pressurised wagons, the valves are generally located at the bottom of the tank to facilitate unloading, while they may also have an inlet and a dome housing various pipes at the top. Pressurised wagons, on the other hand, are fitted with a pressure plate, safety valves and a cylindrical protective dome at the top, through which loading and unloading takes place.
Thermally insulated tank wagons, sometimes fitted with reheating or refrigeration systems, are specially designed for transporting liquids that need to be maintained at a specific temperature or need to remain sufficiently fluid, such as heavy fuel oil or bitumen.
In general, the tank of a tank wagon is partially partitioned to mitigate the effects of liquid movements that could compromise the stability of the wagon. When it is completely partitioned, it can be used to transport various liquids.
