A little bit of history:
A tank wagon represents a specialised rail vehicle designed to transport liquid or powdered products. There is a considerable diversity of this equipment, adapted to the various types of transportable substances.
These tank wagons can come in different configurations, with options for thermal insulation, pressurisation, as well as designs for single or multiple loading. Non-pressurised wagons generally have their valves at the bottom, underneath the tank, to facilitate unloading, while some may have an inlet and a dome housing various pipes at the top. Pressurised wagons, on the other hand, are fitted with a pressure plate comprising the complete fittings, including safety valves, as well as a cylindrical protective dome at the top, used for loading and unloading.
Thermally insulated wagons, possibly fitted with reheating or refrigeration systems, are used for transporting liquids that need to be maintained at a specific temperature or that are sufficiently fluid (such as heavy fuel oil, bitumen, etc.).
The tank of a tank wagon is generally partially partitioned to mitigate the effects of liquid movements that could compromise the stability of the wagon. When it is fully partitioned, it can be used to transport a variety of liquids.
