This type of tombereau wagon was operated by the Compagnie des chemins de fer de Paris à Lyon et à la Méditerranée, a French railway company that existed from 1857 to 1938. These rail vehicles were designed to transport bulk goods such as coal, gravel, sand, etc. They generally had low sides and doors that opened to make it easier to load and unload goods.
