A little bit of history:
Fret SNCF, a French rail company, operates as a subsidiary of Société nationale des chemins de fer français (SNCF), part of Rail Logistics Europe, the rail freight and logistics arm of the SNCF group.
Until 31 December 2019, Fret SNCF was an entity with the status of an industrial and commercial public establishment within SNCF. Previously, this activity was referred to as SNCF Marchandises.
In the steel industry, the term "coil" (English word) refers to a sheet metal coil produced by hot rolling. Sometimes it is also used to refer to cold-rolled sheet, although in this context the term "coil" is more frequently used.
Derived from hot rolling, coils represent a semi-finished product for the steel industry, themselves derived from slabs. These coils generally have an average weight of 12 tonnes, but can exceed 25 tonnes, with a width varying from 1,250 to 2,000 mm. The thickness of the coiled sheet varies between 2 and 6 mm. The use of large coils in the transformation industry is motivated by considerations of handling, installation time and adjustment. Steelmakers generally seek to roll as thinly as possible to improve the added value of their product and, if possible, avoid the next stage of cold rolling.
