A little history:
The BB 8100 are mixed electric locomotives from the SNCF designed following the electrification of the Paris-Lyon line.
From the large family of BB Midi (compagnie des chemins de fer du Midi), BB 300 (compagnie du chemin de fer de Paris à Orléans) and BB 900 (State Railways Administration), these DC locomotives were designed to optimise the qualities of all these series in terms of versatility and flexibility of use, reduced maintenance times and costs, and lower manufacturing costs thanks to the development of a large series5. After the development of the prototype BB 8001, contemporary with the latest steam engines, which they replaced as electrification progressed, the BB 8100 can be seen on most lines electrified in 1.5 kV continuous.
