A little touch of history:
In 1958, SNCF began building a series of 318 medium-power diesel-electric locomotives, specially designed to pull self-propelled railcars carrying freight and passenger trains. These machines are distinguished by their simple design, with a single driver's cab framed by an extended cab cover in front of the motor-generator unit, and a short cab cover at the rear. The distinctive shape of the cab roof results from the installation of ceiling-mounted silencers. Originally designated 040 DG until 31 December 1961, they were renamed BB 66000 from January 1962, forming an important series of diesel locomotives within the SNCF.
This series came in three distinct tranches:
Subsequently, other series were developed on the same basis, including BB 66400, BB 66600, BB 66700, BB 69200 and BB 69400, as well as two series of prototypes, BB 66691-66692 and BB 66901-66902.
