A little history:
The CC 6500 locomotives marked the heyday of single-current locomotives in France from the 1970s onwards, positioning themselves as the most efficient of their era. These machines, part of the "Nez cassés" family delivered between 1964 and 1999 in France and abroad, were derived from the CC 40100 and CC 72000, using the same bogies as the latter. The basic body structure is common to the CC 72000 and CC 21000, differing only in the body trims and equipment anchoring points.
Initially designed by Paul Arzens, these locomotives sported a distinctive metallic grey, Capitole red and orange livery, matched to the Grand Confort coaches to form some of the SNCF's flagship trains at the time. Arzens dubbed this decoration the "livrée coup de soleil". Although intended to match the French TEEs, these locomotives were never deployed in a CC 14500 series for single-phase alternating current.
