The BB 22200, an iconic series of French electric locomotives, was designed to operate on both the SNCF's 1.5 kV DC and 25 kV 50 Hz AC networks. The "broken nose" models were the brainchild of French designer Paul Arzens, who contributed to several locomotive designs for SNCF at the time. Between 1976 and 1986, Alstom built a total of 205 locomotives in six series. From 1999, these locomotives were allocated to various divisions. The freight locomotives were given the characteristic FRET grey/green/white livery.
