The BB 22200 series, designed by Frenchman Paul Arzens, was specially developed for use on the SNCF's 1.5 kV direct current network, as well as the 25 kV 50 Hz alternating current network. These "broken nose" locomotives were produced by Alstom between 1976 and 1986, totalling 205 units in six series. From 1999, these locomotives were allocated to different divisions, with those dedicated to freight sporting the distinctive FRET grey/green/white livery.
