A little touch of history:
The SNCF's BB 8500 electric locomotives use a continuous supply voltage of 1,500 volts and are colloquially known as "Dancers" because of their unpredictable suspension.
As part of the BB Alsthom series, these locomotives were specially designed to be coupled to commuter trains on the South-East and South-West networks of the Île-de-France, as well as regional trains in the Midi and South-West of France, which operate with a DC power supply.
Derived from the BB 25500 by the removal of the single-phase equipment, these locomotives retain most of the features of their parent series, notably the double reduction and the chassis.
Initially delivered in green, some locomotives in this series were repainted in the Île-de-France and Multiservices liveries in the 1990s, while others adopted the En Voyage livery in the 2000s.
Designed with versatility in mind, this series of locomotives is capable of multiple-unit operation and has specific reduction ratios, one for "low-speed" freight trains and the other for "high-speed" messenger and passenger trains.
