From 1857 to 1938, the Compagnie des chemins de fer de Paris à Lyon et à la Méditerranée (PLM) operated an extensive network connecting the country's Mediterranean regions to Paris and Lyon. When the Société Nationale des Chemins de Fer Français (SNCF) was created in 1937, PLM was merged with this new entity, enabling the SNCF to acquire PLM's specialist wagons. These wagons were specially designed to transport various bulk goods, such as coal, gravel, sand and many others. Their special feature was their lowered walls and doors, making it easier to load and unload the goods.
