They were used in particular by the Compagnie des chemins de fer de Paris et Lyon et la Méditerran&e (PLM), one of the main French railway companies of the period. Founded in 1857, PLM operated a vast network of railway lines linking Paris, Lyon and the Mediterranean, with branches to major destinations such as Marseille, Nice, Geneva, Montpellier and other major cities. The company was renowned for its luxury passenger trains, such as the Orient-Express and the Train Bleu, which ran between Paris and international and tourist destinations. To transport a variety of goods, PLM used different types of carriage, including tombereau wagons. In 1938, PLM merged with other French rail companies to form the Société nationale des chemins de fer français (SNCF), which is the national rail operator in France today.
