A little touch of history:
The BB 20200 locomotives, manufactured by Alsthom at its Belfort factory, use the body and traction chain of the BB 17000s of the third sub-series. The main visual distinction lies in the addition of a third headlight on the BB 20200s, required for international routes.
The single-engined bogies are equipped with a double reduction ratio allowing a maximum speed of 90 km/h (for freight) or 140 km/h (for passengers). The power of these locomotives, 2,940 kW at 25 kV-50 Hz, similar to that of the BB 17000, is reduced to 1,660 kW at 15 kV-16 ²?? Hz. Because of the additional electrical equipment required for the two currents used, the weight of the BB 20200 reaches 80 tonnes, compared with the 78 or 79 tonnes of the BB 17000. In the 1990s, a project to convert half a dozen BB 17000s to BB 20200s was envisaged, but never came to fruition, the entire fleet of BB 17000s being reserved for service on the Paris suburbs.
Originally, they sported the dark bluish-green 312 livery with white stripes and daffodil yellow lettering, then, towards the end of their career, adopted the concrete grey livery with orange stripes. These locomotives can be coupled in multiple units with each other or with the BB 17000 (at 25 kV-50 Hz only).
Due to the rigidity of their suspension, shared with other locomotives of the same generation produced by Alsthom (BB 8500, BB 16500, BB 17000, BB 25500), they are colloquially nicknamed the "dancers".
