A little touch of history :
The Series 231 E was created in response to the need, after the First World War, to develop powerful steam locomotives suited to the increasingly heavy French express trains.
Rather than design expensive new models, André Chapelon was commissioned by the Paris Orléans railway to overhaul existing Pacific-type steam locomotives, adapting them to the new requirements.
The engineer's studies resulted in an increasein powerand economiesin consumption, mainly thanks to improvementsin thermodynamics.
The success has confirmed its approach: the modified locomotive has reached test speeds of up to 174 km/h, and in daily service has maintained proud peaks of 130 km/h.
By increasing the locomotive's power by 50% while reducing consumption costs, Chapelon transformed the old steam locomotives into viable machines for express trains.
