Series 41 The class 41 1'D1' locomotive (axle arrangement 141) was designed by the industry for fast freight trains as part of DRG's locomotive unification programme. The two prototypes were delivered by Schwartzkopff in 1936. The chassis was of a new design, and the boiler was the same as that of the 03 series, with the difference that for the BR 41 it was designed for 20 bar. The axle load could be set to either 18 or 20 tonnes. The 41 series was the first universal multi-purpose locomotive series. The two pre-series machines were followed by 364 slightly improved series locomotives, which were delivered by almost all German locomotive factories by 1941. The locomotives, which with their 1,900 bhp could reach speeds of 90 km/h, were used in almost every field. After the Second World War, 216 locomotives remained with the DB. However, the machines' dilapidated ST47K boilers soon proved to be a problem. But as it was impossible to dispense with the 41 series, DB designed an all-welded boiler with combustion chamber as a replacement. Compared with the long-tube boiler used until then, this had a larger heating surface with highly efficient radiation and could therefore withstand heavier loads. Between 1957 and 1961, 102 class 41 locomotives were fitted with this new boiler in the main workshop in Braunschweig. Together with the removal of the front apron, it significantly changed the appearance of the BR 41. Forty of these converted locomotives were also fitted with an oil-fired main boiler. The last converted machines with heating grates had to leave service in 1971.
You will find this model in a DC version in the Trix H0 range under ref. 22841.
