At the beginning of the 20th century, the powerful Mh series tender locomotives were built for the narrow-gauge Mariazellerbahn mountain link. After a few years, high passenger volumes led to the electrification of the route to Mariazell and Gusswerk, and from 1911 steam locomotives were only used on the non-electrified Mariazellerbahn parallel route between Ober-Grafendorf and Gresten, known as the "Krumpe". Following this, the Mhs, whose designation changed to 399 for the ÖBB in 1953, were operated on Austrian narrow-gauge railways. From around 1970, they were concentrated in the Waldviertel, where until the 1980s they handled the bulk of rail traffic.
