This model is an N scale reproduction of a Class 01 steam locomotive and is offered under the Trix brand name, reference 16016. The manufacturer was inspired by the serviceability of loco 01 066 in 2010. It is based at the Bavarian Railway Museum in Nördlingen. This version incorporates an old-fashioned boiler, a front apron and large Wagner smoke deflectors.
The Class 01 steam locomotive was a powerful locomotive used by the Deutsche Reichsbahn, the railway company of the former GDR. The Class 01 was considered to be a Pacific locomotive due to its 2'C1' axle arrangement (two carrying axles at the front, one driving axle at the rear). Class 01 locomotives were first built in 1925. They were produced in several series until 1938. They were designed for high speeds and powerful traction, making them the locomotives of choice for express and heavy passenger trains. The 01 class was fitted with a two-cylinder steam engine with Walschaerts-type valve timing. The first locomotives were initially designed for a maximum speed of 110 km/h, but later versions were modified to reach a maximum speed of 130 km/h. They were also fitted with compressed air brakes to ensure effective braking. In all, more than 200 class 01 locomotives were built, but most of them were withdrawn from service in the 1970s with the liberalisation of railway lines in Germany. However, a few examples of the Class 01 were loaned out and are still used for railway exhibitions, testifying to the historical importance of these powerful steam locomotives.
