The brief history:
In order to replace steam locomotives, which were expensive and labour-intensive to run, the Federal Railways of Germany decided to build their own steam locomotives; From 1958, the Austrian Federal Railways purchased a series of 400-horsepower diesel locomotives known as the 2062 series. These small diesel locomotives, of which there were 65 in total, were manufactured by the Jenbacher factory in Tyrol.
The Jenbacher factory is located in Tyrol.
These locomotives were fitted with cast-iron front shields to act as ballast, and were used extensively throughout Austria for shunting and construction work. On the secondary lines of Lower Austria, they were often used alongside passenger trains consisting of one or two carriages. The last locomotives in this series were withdrawn from service in 2003. Nevertheless, some of these locomotives are still in service today, mainly for industrial and construction purposes, under the name of the X262 series.
