A little history:
After the Ae 4/4 on the Bern-Lötschberg-Simplon-Bahn, which went into service from 1944, had proved its worth for two decades, other older mainline machines were due to be replaced in the early 1960s.While SBB was aiming to acquire Re 4/4? BLS opted for a more modern technology with silicon rectifiers and shaft current motors. These engines, initially classified as Ae 4/4?? then Re 4/4 after technical improvements, were built by SLM and BBC and used for both passenger and freight transport on the BLS, GBS, SEZ and BN network and adjacent SBB lines.
