Founded in 1945 by Alessandro Rossi, a model train enthusiast, this company was born after the purchase of an electric switch company. With his partner Riva, he quickly transformed this company into the first Italian manufacturer of electric trains, shortly before the Lima company.
The first productions were OO scale AC toys. The first HO 1/87th scale model was the Milwaukee Road Hiawatha steam train locomotive, produced from 1948 to 1954.The company went on to produce Italian models and other networks with, in particular, models of prestigious trains, sleeping cars and American equipment including the famous Big Boy.
The first models were produced in the early 1960s.
In the 1990s, Rivarossi bought the Lima, Arnold and Jouef brands, before being acquired by Hornby in 2004. The brand was retained but production was transferred to China.
