As of 1928, a total of 520 locomotives série 64 were put into service. The locomotives, which reached a speed of 90 km/h, were a reconstruction of the unified steam locomotives according to the plans, which facilitated the supply of spare parts. The locomotives were mainly used on secondary lines and for light passenger and freight trains. At the Deutsche Bundesbahn, 52 units were still recorded in the preservation register when the computerised rotation number was introduced on 1 January 1968. In contrast to the DR locomotives, which were mainly used in the northern plains, the Bundesbahn 64s, after the 64 446 had been transferred from the DR to the Bundesbahn, were mainly used in the northern plains; transferred on 30 April 1966 from the Hamburg-Rothenburgsort depot to the Plattling depot, were used exclusively south of the Main Line.
