A little history:
In 1912, the Südbahn-Gesellschaft, as a replacement for its ageing class 229 locomotives, ordered a locomotive for heavy passenger trains. The Südbahn-Gellschaft developed the 629 series, the world's first superheated steam tank locomotive, with the Pacific 2'C1' wheel arrangement. The first unit was delivered in 1913, followed by 14 more over the next two years. The excellent results led the Imperial and Royal Railways to purchase 25 almost identical locomotives before the end of the monarchy in 1918.
After the First World War, 15 locomotives remained in Austria, divided between the Southern and State Railways. The newly founded CSD had to receive 15 locomotives, designated 354.121 to 354.135.
