A little history:
The 218 series has done more to shape the image of the Deutsche Bundesbahn and Deutsche Bahn than any other type of diesel locomotive over the last five decades. From 1971 onwards, 398 locomotives of this series were put into service and used for both passenger and freight trains. They reached a top speed of 140 km/h with a power output of 1,840 kW. The 218 series has seen a number of colour variants over the years. The first 218s were always delivered in the crimson colour scheme that was usual for diesel locomotives in the era.
