In 1945, 44 locomotives of the E 94 series of the Deutsche Reichsbahn (DR), the national German railway company created in 1920 after the First World War, remained in Austria. In 1952, the Austrian Federal Railways (Österreichische Bundesbahnen) ordered three additional locomotives. In 1954, the E 94 series was renamed the 1020 series. For more than five decades, this locomotive was used to transport goods throughout most of Austria.
