A little history:
In 2019, the ÖBB have embarked on a modernisation programme to revitalise their double-decker trains (DOSTO). The initiative will see around 100 carriages renovated to modern Cityjet standards by 2023. Improvements include the addition of on-board WiFi, new seat upholstery, multifunctional spaces in each intermediate carriage, offering more space for bicycles, pushchairs and luggage, as well as the creation of new rest areas.
In May 2022, halfway through this ongoing DOSTO upgrade programme, electric locomotive 1116 181 was decorated according to the Cityjet design. This illustrates ÖBB's commitment to offering attractive public transport solutions, particularly for commuting in the suburbs of Lower Austria.
