This scale model is an HO-scale reproduction of the original state of a Bern-Lötschberg-Simplon (BLS) Ae 6/8 electric locomotive. It is offered by ACME under reference 60531.
History
To transport coal between the Ruhr and northern Italy, in 1924 the Bern Lötschberg Simplon (BLS) railway ordered the construction of four locomotives from train manufacturers Sécheron in Geneva and Breda in Milan. These locomotives could pull trains weighing at least 500 tonnes at speeds of 50 km/h on the Lötschberg's 27 mm/m gradients. The first two giant locomotives, with (1'Co)(Co1') axles, weighed 140 tonnes. They entered service in 1926. They were followed by two more units in 1931. These locomotives were a constant success throughout their service until they were scrapped in the 1980s. Unfortunately, none of the "Breda" type locomotives have been preserved.
